Current update on the status of GM papaya in Hawaii

On Nov. 18, 2016 Circuit Judge Consuelo M. Callahan upheld a lower court’s decision that ruled Hawaii law prohibits counties from regulating agricultural matters. This ruling prohibits Hawaii counties from enacting their own bans or regulations on GM crops.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/energy-environment/judge-hawaii-counties-cant-regulate-gmos-and-pesticides/2016/11/18/aa2a9250-adda-11e6-8f19-21a1c65d2043_story.html

In November 2014, as this article was being finalized, a judge with the U.S. District Court of Hawaii ruled against the Hawaiian County law which Margaret Wille proposed and the Council passed. The judge ruled the law was invalid because it was preempted by Hawaiian state law and federal law. Legal battles are likely to continue.

Updates on the situation will be posted.
